For as long as I can remember, I've dreamed of watching an Olympic event live and in person. China was a little too far to venture as was Turin, Italy. But at last, the Olympics are back in Canada and Vancouver's 2010 Games presents the perfect opportunity to take in the action. The Games will be divided between the cities of Vancouver, Richmond and Whistler.
A visit to the 2010 Games also provides the perfect opportunity to combine a family vacation in Whistler village's winter wonderland. Whistler is approximately 120 kilometers from Vancouver and easily accessible by rail, floatplane and the newly expanded, scenic sea to sky highway. There are also direct shuttles available from Vancouver airport, and no cars are needed in the village as everything is easily accessible via the village's pedestrian-only roads.
The beauty of Whistler lies in its two main attractions: Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountain. These two side by side snow capped peaks provide a vertical lift of 5280 feet. Whistler village also boasts the continent's largest ski area with 8100 acres. Luckily, there are free mountain orientation tours, grouped by ability, to allow visitors to discover all that the area has to offer. Most impressive is the annual snow fall of 915 cm and the fact that you can start skiing in November and don't have to stop till June (though from experience, the snow is not the greatest at this time of year.)
The village is a haven not only for ski-lovers and snow-boarders, but anyone who enjoys the outdoors. There are hundreds of opportunities for cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, mountain climbing and a family favorite, tubing.
Between October 3 and November 7, 2008, Canadian residents can visit vancouver2010.com to request their choice of 2010 Olympic Winter Games tickets. Just keep in mind though that there's no rush for Canadians to submit their request on day one, as ticket requests issued early have no advantage over those put forward closer to November 7th.
Consider booking an Olympic Experience Package (OEP), which combines a variety of events while taking into account timing for transportation and early arrival at venues. For anyone from out of town, OEPs will be the easiest way to ensure you maximize your experience at the 2010 Games. These events will be separated by city and spread over three to six days with a minimum of three sessions. You can also mix and match by purchasing additional single sessions.
The OEPs are the only way to secure a ticket to one of the Vancouver Victory Ceremonies, which include the awarding of the Olympic medals and performances from world-class artists. Best of all, OEPs will be allocated first, followed by single sessions. All remaining single session tickets will be available for every event, in every price category, thereafter.
All oversubscribed events, such as the ice hockey finals or the Opening Ceremony, will be allocated via lottery thus giving everyone who applies an equal opportunity. Closer to Games time, all remaining tickets will be available at box offices, online, as well and through a call centre.
There is also the opportunity to be part of the Games by joining as a volunteer team member. Depending on your availability and your skill, there are still a variety of positions available to interested candidates.
The best part of all is that attending the Games doesn't necessarily mean breaking the bank. Admission prices start at just 25$ and half the tickets are available for $100 or less. So make the dream come true – go to vancouver2010.com and book your tickets today.
